Midweek Morsels: Dress up your doggie for the fashion show

Quote of the day: “A man in Ireland was arrested with more than 500 pounds of marijuana. So I guess there is a little pot at the end of the rainbow.”

— Late night funnyman Jimmy Fallon

Dori DuVall writes that the Border Animal Rescue will host its fifth annual fundraiser, Mardi Paws Doggie Fashion Show and Costume Party, on Sunday in Bisbee.

Dogs and owners are encouraged to dress up in their favorite fashion or costume and join the fun. The time is 1-4 p.m. at the Central School located at 34 Howell Avenue in Old Bisbee. The fashion show begins at 2:30 p.m.

There also will be refreshments, a raffle and silent auction.

BAR is staffed solely by volunteers and is 100 percent dependent on donations and grants. Anyone wishing to donate a product or service to the raffle or auction call Dori in Sierra Vista (458-2997) or Kelly in Bisbee (917-749-5331).

LOCAL-STATE Feb. 10 Why isn’t a simple majority vote always enough to determine civic affairs in your own cities, towns, counties, colleges and school, Mr. Agenbroad? Because the 51 percent mob always votes to seize the freedom, blood and treasure of the other 49 percent. That’s how wars start. And by the way, I’m not a one percenter. I’m a working class property owner. I’m sure most of you have noticed that the...

LOCAL-STATE Feb. 4 Recent developments have started me mourning all over again, at the loss of our congressional representative. Even before Ms. Giffords was attacked, and thereby elevated to the status of hero/saint, she seemed to be an honest, middle-of-the-road, hard-working person, dedicated to constituent service and the welfare of the citizenry. Now, here comes Jesse Kelly again, pandering and willing to say whatever he assumes will...

LOCAL-STATE Jan. 28 What House Speaker Andy Tobin has decided to do by re-doing the congressional district maps and putting them before the voters is nothing short of gerrymandering and it will be in the courts for years. Gerrymandering is illegal. Gov. Brewer did what a lot of us would like to do. She speaks for all of us who are angry with Obama’s policies. While he is out and about courting the Hispanic vote, he’s thumbed his...

Regarding those high efficient light bulbs.

I am sorry I ever started using them.  About eight of them fizzled and cracked or would not work when I first put them in.  Over the next few weeks about a dozen more burned out.  I did get free replacements.  I went on Google and found that others were having the same...

To the Editor:

I really must respond to the very negative item in Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2012, “On Your Mind” column wherein a reader called the Frost Fest at Huachuca City Library ‘a dismal failure’. To the contrary, the event was a great success. How could it be otherwise where there were 47 entries from young people grades K-8? This means that more than 47...

While attending the impressive and entertaining cowboy poets gathering Feb. 4, my silver and gold ring with an eagle emblem overlay slipped unnoticed off my finger.
